GET A REAL ID BEFORE May 7, 2025 - WHAT DOCUMENTS DO I NEED TO BRING WITH ME

Save time by coming prepared! Find out what documents you need to get your REAL ID gold star driver's licenses or identification card.  What documents do I need?

REAL ID-Marked Driver's Licenses and Identification Cards

Iowa began issuing REAL ID-compliant driver's licenses (DL's) and identification cards (ID's) on January 15, 2013, in compliance with the REAL ID Act of 2005.  Presently, May 7, 2025 is the date REAL ID's or US Passports will be required for flying in all commercial aircraft in the United States.  The REAL ID Act promotes security in the issuance of DL's and ID cards and deters identify theft and fraud by requiring states to meet certain physical and procedural security standards for production and issuance of DL's and ID cards as well as insuring documentation standards are met, including proof of identity, date of birth, Social Security  number, residence and lawful status or presence.  REAL ID-marked DL's and ID's can be used for "official federal purposes" as well as for driving or identification.  "Official federal purposes" are defined as boarding commercial aircraft, entering federal buildings that require identification and entering nuclear power plants.

For more information on REAL ID and how to obtain a REAL ID-marked card, visit: REAL ID Information.

Iowa has a new driver's license and ID card, effective June 4, 2018

All transfers of Driver's Licenses to Iowa from Out-of-State, first-time Iowa Driver's Licenses, First-time Iowa Identification Cards and updates to REAL ID Licenses MUST be initiated before 3:45 PM to allow adequate processing time.

The State of Iowa began the transition to issuing 8 year licenses on January 1, 2014.  For more details click:  Eight Year Driver's License.  The transition will occur over the next 5 years, from 2014 through 2018.  During that time the DOT will randomly assign customers five, six, seven or eight year licenses designed to equally spread the renewal volumes over an eight year period.  The yearly fee will not change.  The basic yearly fees remain $4.00 per year for a noncommercial license, $8.00 per year for a commercial driver's license and $2.00 per year for a motorcycle endorsement.

Central Issue of Driver's Licenses and Identification Cards

The State of Iowa has changed to a central issuance system for driver's licenses and identification cards.  Under the new system, Iowans will continue to report to a driver's license station in the State of Iowa.  Dickinson County's station is located at the Dickinson County Courthouse just inside the west door of the building next to the Treasurer's Office, open Monday through Friday - by appointment only.  The application process and requirements for a license will remain the same.  The costs for licenses and identification cards will remain the same.  There are, however, two significant changes:

  1. A temporary paper license will be issued at the station and current licenses and identification cards presented for updating will be returned.
  2. In approximately two weeks the actual plastic license or identification card will be sent through the US Postal Service to the mailing address given. More information can be found at the Iowa Department of Transportation's website:  Driver's License Central Issuance Information.

Online Driver's License Services

The Iowa Dept. of Transportation has the following online driver's license services:  Online Driver's License Renewal (see the DOT website for qualifications); Signup for Receiving Renewal Notifications by Email; Making Mailing Address Changes; Accessing Driver Records; CDL Self-Certification; Medical Examiner's Certification; Accessing Reinstatement Requirements.  Click the above link for the Iowa DOT's myMVD website.

Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing Indicator Driver's License Designations

During an in-person or online transaction, you can request that your license or ID indicate your status as “deaf” or “hard-of-hearing.” If you choose to add this to your license or ID, it will also be visible in the database used by law enforcement to lookup a driver’s information during a traffic stop. This information may help officers better understand a customer’s behavior if they appear to be non‐responsive to verbal questions due to their hearing status, resulting in a more successful interaction with a deaf or hard-of-hearing individual. This is a voluntary indicator and is not a restriction of driving privileges.
